Description Simon Urbanek 2016-03-24 03:50:34 UTC
make install fails with:

installing doc ...
mkdir /Library/Frameworks/R.framework/Versions/3.4/Resources/doc
mkdir /Library/Frameworks/R.framework/Versions/3.4/Resources/man1
install: FAQ: No such file or directory
install: RESOURCES: No such file or directory
install: NEWS.pdf: No such file or directory
install: NEWS.pdf: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [install-sources2] Error 71
make: *** [install] Error 1

when the build system doesn't have TeX/texinfo. The configure step warns:

configure: WARNING: you cannot build info or HTML versions of the R manuals
configure: WARNING: you cannot build PDF versions of the R manuals
configure: WARNING: you cannot build PDF versions of vignettes and help pages

but the make step doesn't fail. Analogously, make install should only warn (at the worst), but not fail.

Work-around is to use

touch doc/FAQ doc/RESOURCES doc/NEWS.pdf

and repeat

make install

(Note: above example is on OS X but it fails equally on Linux).
