It would be nice if color output for the console were officially supported, along the lines of IPython.

Currently there is an (unsupported) package to provide some basic color output functionality: http://www.lepem.ufc.br/jaa/colorout.html

But because of the way it operates it is not allowed on CRAN and it's coloring mechanism is very basic, lacking the ability to discriminate between numbers in variable names and actually numeric values.

Is there any possibility of having adding support for something like this in the future?

In general, I think one of the greatest strengths of many of the modern languages are their interactive consoles, and having a feature-rich REPL would be a great assset for R.
